Salt on Toronto Roads

Why Do We Use Road Salt to Melt Ice On Toronto Roads?

Known as the original ‘anti-skid technology’, when streets and highways in Toronto get covered in snow and ice, Road Salt works to lower the melting point of water, taking advantage of the lower melting point. Once temperatures reach 0°C ice will begin to form. By adding Bulk Road Salt, the temperature of the ice will drop and as the salt dissolves into liquid water, the ice will begin to melt.

A Marquette University Study* examined highway accidents during ice and snow-related weather periods. Bulk Road Salt helped to reduce the following:

  • Car Crashes by 88%
  • Crash-related Injuries by 85%
  • Accident Costs by 85%

When temperatures drop to below -20°C in Toronto, Road Salt can be mixed with calcium chloride to better advance the dissolving process. Another option is sand. The gravel-like substance provides drivers with more traction on Toronto’s frozen roads.
